Caring For Your Cashmere

Cashmere pieces are a worthy investment, so it’s important that they’re cared for correctly. It takes time and a healthy dose of patience to look after luxurious knits, but the hard work pays off – subsequently extending the shelf life of your beloved jumper.

Here are the necessary steps to washing, drying and storing cashmere.

What is the best way to wash cashmere?

Use the handwash cycle on your machine to wash your cashmere. If your machine doesn’t have a handwash or “gentle” cycle, button up your cash- mere inside a pillow case and put it on a cold wash. Or, better still, hand wash in cool / lukewarm water, with a splash of baby shampoo or Woolite.

How often should you wash cashmere?

This is down to personal preference, but every three wears is the recommended amount. Like a fine wine, high-quality cashmere betters with age, enhancing the fuzzy warm fabrication.

And drying?

Lay your cashmere out to dry flat on a towel. Don’t wring or twist the garment as it comes out the wash, squeeze it gently instead, to ensure it won’t lose its shape.

Keep the moths at bay

Moths love cashmere, particularly any with moisture in the fibres, so to store it safely, make sure it is totally dry. Then fold up and store in zip-lock bags – hangers will stretch out the shoulders.

Pilling is inevitable

All cashmere, no matter how good the quality, is prone to pilling. Keep a fine-toothed comb on hand to deal with bobbles: lay your cashmere flat, gently pass the knitwear comb over the fibres, and the pills will be picked up.
